Step by Step Guide for Domain Transfers

  • 1

Step 1 - Ensure that the administrative contact for your domain name has a valid email address

Both registrars (the old and the new) use this email address to send you important information about the transfer of your domain name. If the contact email address is invalid, you should contact your current registrar to update it.

You can check this by performing a "WHOIS" check on the domain name:

For .com.au domains: https://whois.auda.org.au/

For .com or .net domains: https://whois.icann.org/en

NOTE: If your domain name has privacy protection enabled, a service that hides your personal information from the public, you cannot verify your administrative contact's email address in the Whois database. You must contact your current registrar to cancel the privacy protection, and then you can update the email address, if necessary.

Step 2 – Obtain the domain transfer code (EPP code)

You will need to obtain the transfer code (EPP code) from your current domain registrar. This can sometimes also be called a "Domain Password" or "Domain Secret", depending on the domain's registrar. You will need to contact your current registrar in order to obtain this code from them.

Step 3 – Place the transfer order

Place an order for the domain name transfer via our website.

You can do this via the following URL:

https://clients.hostgeek.com.au/cart.php?a=add&domain=register/

Just follow the on screen steps to place your order. Once your order has been placed an invoice will be created. Once your invoice has been marked as paid, your transfer request will be sent to the registrar. (Note that transfers for .com.au domains are free of charge, while other domains will be invoiced and will we renewed for a year following their transfer.)

Step 4 – Respond to Approval e-mail (IMPORTANT!)

Once the domain transfer request has been received by the registrar and your EPP code has been accepted. A confirmation of transfer e-mail will be sent to the registrant e-mail address for the domain. You will need to respond to e-mail to approve the transfer process.

This step is absolutely critical to ensuring that your domain is successfully transferred. If you do not receive the transfer authorisation email within 24 hours, you will need to double check that the registrant email address for your domain is correct, that ID protection is turned off, and make sure to check your spam folders.

If the transfer authorisation email does not receive a response, the domain cannot be transferred.

Step 5 – Wait for the domain transfer to be processed

The rest of the process is automated and your domain should be transferred within 5 business days.

If there are any delays to your order during this process we will let you know and contact you via e-mail to assist you with your domain transfer. If you have any questions about your domain transfer you can contact us support@hostgeek.com.au
